Welcome to the Safe & Sound Community Choir! Directed by founder Joy Jenkins and support by accompanist Rick Miller, this choir truly welcomes all people. Comprised of St. Paul’s church members, folks from the neighborhood, and guests at our free Sunday breakfast, it is one of the most visible ways in which St. Paul’s is not just in ministry for the marginalized, but in relationship with those who might not feel welcome in other places.
At St. Paul’s, our ministry with the homeless and in-need is about creating community and opportunities. When you pass someone on the street with a sign, or see them in line for the shelter or food bank, do you wonder about their story, about where they came from, the last time someone asked their name and shook their hand? Every Sunday morning we welcome about 150 homeless and in-need people into our Fellowship Hall for a hot, home-cooked breakfast and unlimited coffee (and donuts donated by Dunkin’ Donuts!), and as we talked with them, we discovered that two of the things poverty has taken from them is community and access to religious rituals. Many grew up in the church, singing in the choir and taking communion. We wanted to provide more than a great meal, we wanted to provide the community they were missing. We turned an office space into a beautiful chapel, complete with pews from the sanctuary, to provide a quiet place for prayer, communion and worship during our Sunday breakfast.
Joy Jenkins, sister of our Music Director, Jeff Jenkins, started Safe & Sound to provide a positive community activity and raise awareness of the humanity of the homeless. We all have many gifts and talents, we often just lack the venue to share them. Choir practice occurs at 9am on Sunday after our free breakfast at 8am, and all are welcome to both.
We have big dreams for the Safe & Sound Choir, and would love you to be involved in developing this unique program. We want to provide matching shirts, new clothing, bus passes to make it easier to get to rehearsals and performances, and provide meals and other resources to support the in-need members of the choir. If you feel called to be a part of the program, send a gift to St. Paul UMC – S&S Choir 1615 Ogden, Denver CO 80218
